A little about
Goa
and Goans. Tourism in the
Goa, Daman
& Diu region is on an average of of 2 million visitors annually.
Goa has been on the international arena of interest and the people of Goa are
comfortable interacting with Foriegners, The people of Goa readily assist
foriegners in distress, a privileged they are not likely to extend to
Indians. The increase increase in tourism, along with a good
climate, excellent pre 1961 Goa administered infrastructures,
the invitation for foreigners to set up companies in Goa and a strong rental
market has changed the Goa property market creating an influx of
Indians in This once tiny, tranquil heaven on earth. Non Resident Goans, spread
accross this big blue marble are an extremely wealthy community who are all
looking to their homeland to relocate, invest and where better place for a Goan
than real estate in Goa. India's rapidly growing economy and swelling middle
classes are swarming into Goa to secure a piece of Goa which further fuels the
Goa property market and adds to the already saturated demand for Goa real
estate. If one asks the
elders of Goa, or hear the narration of history passed down from one generation
to another, we hear of better times and what India did to the Jewel of Asia, We
hear of the Portuguese administering the existing law
(which most people today call “Portuguese Law” ) for their easier
understanding of the law, The Portuguese translated the
language of all Goa departments from the language of Goa
into Portuguese. It was this administrating of Goa by
the Portuguese that made the people of
Goa
socially a 100 years ahead of its nearest neighbours
which was then under British occupation. Down the corridors of time
Goa has been different things to different people. To the
Portuguese conquerors it was ‘Golden Goa’, the
El Dorado,
the ‘
Rome of
the East’. Such was its beauty and grandeur, that a traveller was moved to
remark: ‘Whoever has seen Goa, need not visit Lisboa’—
Lisbon, which was then the grand epicenter of
the Portuguese dominions. In the sixties and seventies, it was, as we
have remarked, a haven for the hippies. Since then
Goa
has sadly moved backward , a confused yet excited Council of Ministers, a
magnificent new Assembly complex, its citizens among the most literate in the
country with a per capita income the highest in the land.. At the hub of this
prosperity, is the Tourism industry. At the Goa Tourism Development Corporation
(GTDC), we take a humble bow in acknowledgement, in some small measure, of
putting
Goa on the tourist map of our country.
You will notice a vast difference in mannerism between a person from Goa and
those who come here from across our
Goa
borders. The people of
Goa, value and
honor they elders, are respectable to others who are worthy of respect, and
civilly indifferent to uncultured or uncivilized persons irrespective of where
they come from. Till today the people of Goa hold strong ties with the
Portuguese, as opposed to the resentment held by the now independent
colonies of
Britain
with the British. In the 15th century, the local Goa administrative body at the
time invited the Portuguese to help push back the greatest land force in the
region of the time, Portugal having one of the largest sea
fleet of the time with a capability to move soldiers great distances
with ease. Contrary to popular belief, the Portuguese never claimed Goa to
be a
territory of
Portugal, unlike Britian did with the now called
India.
Britain deemed the lands they conquered as
revenue states, The Portuguese made no such claim nor were taxes levied
against the people of
Goa. 1843 the
capital was moved to Panjim from Velha Goa. By mid-18th century the area under
occupation had expanded to most of
Goa's
present day state limits. theGoa has a long history stretching back to the 3rd
century BC, when it formed part of the Mauryan Empire. Over the centuries various
dynasties have ruled
Goa. Rashtrakutas, Kadambas,
Silaharas, Chalukyas, Bahamani Muslims and most famously the Portuguese have
been rulers of
Goa.
In 1498, Vasco da Gama became the first European to set foot in India through a
sea route, landing in Calicut (Kozhikode) in Kerala, followed by an arrival in
what is now known as Old Goa (Velha Goa).In Goa, Being a religiously tolerant
community Christmas, Easter, Ganesh Chaturthi, the Shimgo festival and the
Carnival are celebrated with equal fervor. Music is an integral part of the
lives of the people of
Goa - Konkani folk
songs, to Manddo, to the introduction of trance music during the age of the
flower child or as people call it “ The hippie era”.
Goa
houses the Bom Jesus Basilica which holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier.
The Goans love a good game of football. Lately, cricket and field hockey are
gaining popularity. Goan cuisine is a treasure trove of delightfully
scrumptious fish dishes, to the occasional traveler vindaloo, xacuti, sorpotel,
khatkhate and feni are the most remembered. Traveling in
Goa
can be fun! In some places, there are river crossings which are serviced by
toll free ferry boats. When discovering Goa or looking to find properties in
Goa, do not forget Goa has its own unique mode of transportation these
are the unique Goa motorcycle taxis, auto rickshaws, metered and un-metered
taxis and privately operated buses also ply in Goa.
Goa is refreshingly divine, inviting, exciting, invigorating
and at times exasperating.
Goa is all this,
and so much more! The Portuguese were builders of functional houses keeping in
mind goa weather, Goa property locations with the Portuguese unique style of
housing hat has given Goa properties and Goa houses the sought after interest
created over the past 8 years for houses in Goa, which we refer to as Portugese
houses and goan houses in Goa. Most of sought after
Goa
property was developed during their era. Even today beautiful old Goan villas
can be seen in most of the central and coastal areas in the state of
Goa . In Goa real estate market many of these
villas are the heaven all persons with the financial capacity eagerly look for
amongst the
Goa property available today.
Persons seeking
Goa property will often
specify that they want an old Goan villa, not knowing the vast difference
between a Goan house, a Portuguese house, a Portuguese styled house and a
heritage house.
Goa has a picturesque
coastline that spans 102.5 km. The Mandovi, the Zuari and
Chapora
River are some of the breathtaking
rivers that bedazzle our
Goa property
and its once breath taking landscape. The scenic beauty is perfectly
complemented by the pleasant climate. Sadly, with the deforestation and the
conversion of Goa property into a Goa concrete jungle, this once moderate Goa
climate weather has been taking a turn for the worst lately.
The
Portuguese administered Goa for about 450 years, until it
was occupied by
India
in 1961. Most people of the
Goa of old
look on that fateful day and lament yet hopeful of better thimes to come.
Goa though a small state its people have large hearts.
The borders of Goa, Daman and Diu by the Indian Army on December 1961
and called a
Union
Territory along with the enclaves of Daman and
Diu. On May 30, 1987 Goa was conferred statehood and
became the 25th state of the
Indian
Republic. Various
local Goa interest groups allege that Goa and the people of
Goa are till today not a party to the People's
Representation Act. In which states that the leadership of the
local indigenous administrative body " Communidade"
hold 75 % representation on Parliament. This has till this day not
become a reality in
Goa. They further say that
those represented under the Peoples Representation Act are entitled to
all Human and Civil Rights set forth by the United Nations. Hence the free
handed and unobstructed decimation of
Goa
and goa properties by various Indian, international companies and
individuals.
India
along with the occupied territories of Goa, Daman and
Diu claiming
to be the worlds largest democracy has fallen a sight short of the
true meaning for a democracy. With widespread infringements of people's
freedom of movement, speech, free press, low value for life. With
wide spread allegations of government departments riddled with corruption
, so effectively integrated and co-ordinated leaving no department of
government unblemished. One can only assume that this
corruption costs the exchequer 100’s of crores of rupees each year in lost
revenue. Which relates into ever rising taxes, making it impossible for a
person living in Goa, or working of his land in Goa to guarantee a meal for his
family, only to fund the machine uncontrolled Goa government spending. History
has shown that when people are unable to feed their
families, it is when, even politically motivated religious, caste creed,
or other crowd incitement techniques cannot quell the
inevitable. Currenlty 25% of the people of
Goa
are “meal insecure”, but government servants seem
to thrive and prosper, surprisingly enough, with or without education,
which brings to mind the phrase “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”
and the inevitable aftermath which always follows. Could this be the
singular most valid reason for destruction of forests, hills, Garbage pile ups
causing health hazards water table contamination, and since the passing of the
land to the tiller act one sees more and more fields growing bumper crops of
Hotels, restaurants and luxurious apartments, which will undoubtedly resulting
in famine. With the lack of interest, by persons entrusted to keep Goa
safe, in verifying identification of persons entering the state of Goa , which
makes
Goa an easy target to infanous persons
seaking refuge. One cannot to forget terrorist and criminals crossing state and
international lines to enter Goa and find safe and scenic refuge here in
beautiful
Goa, with scores of Foriegners in
clusters. Since 1985
Goa has been
witnessing wide spread crime, which until then was unheard of. Walking or
driving in the streets of this once peaceful and beautiful state of Goa, one
will witness widespread signs of unprovoked aggression, desecration og
religious artifacts, road rage, brought on by invasion of personal space,
frustration with the way Goa is being governed in the interest of India being
the goal leaving the people of Goa to fend of what they can or starve.
The latest events show incidents of the unification of people of Goa
rising up against the Government on various fronts, and for various valid
reasons, with a goal to save beloved Goa, and their lawful property in
Goa, from irreversible natural and greed based
disaster. It is unfortunate when the people we entrust to ensure our
democratic way of life is not threatened, maintain order, uphold the law,
protect and to serve are the same people that are a threat to our
civilization and
Goa way of life.
